Clear/Vertical Grain: Ranked by price, low to high

Red Grandis 

Comes from plantation-raised Eucalyptus grandis tree

  • Known for durability and versatility

  • Fine, uniform grain with a smooth texture

  • Highly durable and resistant to decay, making it suitable for interiors and exterior on soffits only. (Not for exterior vertical walls)

  • Machines well, glues easily, and nicely takes finishes and stains.

  • Eco-friendly alternative to tropical hardwoods as harvesting is done legally and responsibly. 

Abodo

Thermally-modified Radiata pine; a brand- Made from FSC®-certified or PEFC™-certified softwoods, always sourced from renewable plantations. 

  • Designed to be environmentally friendly; a strong focus on reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable forestry

  • Beautiful dark color, semi rift grain, knotless. Can be left uncoated or can be stained/painted

Ayous 

  • Tropical, West/Central Africa sourced

  • Thermally modified

  • Certified as meeting the ISO14001 certification

  • Clear, vertical grain. Dense grain structure. Ribbony grain similar to Sapele and Mahogany

  • Lightweight but strong, making it easier to handle & install


Accoya® 

Fast-growing radiata Pine from New Zealand. Dually modified via acetylation (a bio-liquid that expands cell walls, that gives you that hardwood performance).  

  • Exceptional durability, dimensional stability

  • Is sustainable, has long lifespan (and good warranty), is versatile (can be machined, stained/painted, or left untreated).

  • Wears to silver-grey over time if left unfinished

  • Flat cut material which shows a wide grain structure/cathedrals. This can be limited when a clear product is desired. Associated w/ “clear” with vertical grain structure

  • The acetylation process (basically, vinegar) locks in carbon, making it a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwoods and chemically-treated timber.

  • Accoya® has 50 yr warranty when used as siding/trim above ground. 25 yr warranty when used at or below ground level.

Western Red Cedar – C & Better grade:

  • Comes from high-grade, cedar stock of mixed grain

  • Has no (or very minimal) knots

  • Naturally decay- and insect-resistant



TM Hemlock

  • Western Hemlock wood that has been enhanced using a high-heat, low-oxygen process

  • Modification improves performance, dimensionally stability and aesthetics

  • Rich, chocolatey brown throughout — looks similar to tropical hardwoods


Cedar CVG –  A & Better grade:

  • Considered one of the highest-quality clear grades available, coming from premium WRC stock

  • Virtually flawless, fine-grained wood, knotless, with exceptional, uniform appearance

  • Naturally decay- and insect-resistant

  • Top tier pricepoint 

Kebony Clear

A brand from Europe, made from Scotts pine or Radiata pine. 

  • Undergoes a bio-based modification process using Furfuryl alcohol  (a non-toxic liquid derived from plant matter like corncobs or sugarcane waste) 

  • Once impregnated, is heated up to cure the newly modified cells in the wood

  • Changes color to silver/grey over time if left natural

  • Takes finish nicely

  • Highest Price point for clear wood

  • Great warranty


 

Rustic / Knotty Grade: Ranked by price, low to high

Northwest Spruce

  • Clean grain, light color, smooth texture

  • Pale yellowish-white to light brown; takes stain or paint well

  • Readily available in many regions

  • Suitable for interior ceilings/paneling and exterior on soffits only when treated. (Not suitable for exterior, vertical walls)

  • Low durability when not treated with a coating (stain, paint or preservatives). Protect on all sides 

Western Red Cedar – Select Tight Knot (STK)

  • knots as a design element, but only sound, tight, and well-distributed ones

  • A balance between natural character and structural integrity

  • Slightly more movement (shrinkage/expansion) due to knots and grain variation

  • Naturally decay- and insect-resistant

  • Good price point

Thermally Modified Spruce

  • Clean grain, smooth texture. Treated with high heat and steam in a low-oxygen environment to increase stability & rot / insect resistance.

  • A more refined appearance post-treatment. Wood tones are warm.

  • Readily available in many local regions as a fast growing softwood 

Kebony Character 

  • Knotty texture gives a rustic feel at a value-conscious price

  • Rich brown color to begin with, but lightens and eventually silvers to grey when left natural

  • Kebony character goes through the same modification process and comes with the same 30-year warranty as Kebony Clear

  • Raw ends (after cut to length) should be treated with a wood preservative
